Best Things to do in Palawan Island, Philippines

Palawan Island Travel Notes

Palawan Island is like a heaven in the world. The Philippines is an extremely beautiful country with its white sandy beaches, magnificent sea, underwater diversity and warm people. An interesting geography consisting of more than 7,600 islands. The most interesting place of this geography is the thin and long one in the westernmost part of the Philippines.

Places To Visit In Palawan: El Nido

The easiest way to reach the island is by plane. If you have plenty of time and you like long cruises, but very long cruises, you can also go by ship. Scheduled flights are to Puerto Princesa, Palawan’s largest city. You can also land in El Nido by seaplane.

Downtown Puerto Princesa has nothing to see but a beautiful church and a beach filled with fishermen where you can feast very cheaply. In Sabang, 80km from the city, there is the Puerto Princesa Underground River, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. This is the longest navigable underground river in the world. Most of the tourists come to see this river with tours. If you want to travel by yourself without signing up for the tour, you need to get your national park entrance permit from Puerto Princesa. If you come unprepared, it is possible that you will not be able to enter.

Palawan Island’s most popular destination is the tiny town of El Nido at its northern tip. This is a place where electricity and internet are scarce. For this reason, you need to research the electrical situation of the hotel you will be staying at. Only some of the hotels have generators and can provide electricity all day.

Boat tours are El Nido’s biggest attraction. There are tours named A, B, C, D. These are also sold in combinations such as A+B, C+D. Tours with the same name in the whole town mean the same thing. The quality of tour companies varies according to the interest of the staff, the comfort they provide and the lunch they offer. During the tours, snorkeling breaks are given on different islands, caves are entered with canoe tours, and food is served. Food service is not like that: you can find fish, crabs, shrimp, mussels, whatever you look for. They are preparing a mobile banquet table at once. With these tours, you can visit places that are untouched and look like they came out of the movies. If you can only participate in one tour, my suggestion is to choose tour A.

It is also possible to take a tour for a few days. When you take a long tour, accommodation is made in tents on a deserted island. It is almost as if you are staying in a paradise accompanied by millions of stars.

The town of El Nido has its own beaches, too. Especially Las Cabanas and Napcan Beach are the most preferred ones. Napcan Beach can be dangerous during these periods as the number of jellyfish increases during the rainy season. Las Cabanas is generally safer. Moreover, there is an epic sunset here. Transportation to the beaches is done by renting a motor or tuk tuk. Since one way round trip is more expensive than round trip, it makes more sense to arrange a round trip. No documents etc. are kept. You pay your money round trip and trust the driver. Don’t worry, they will come and pick you up at the time you say.

Don’t Return Without Diving in El Nido

Diving is also very popular in El Nido. There are many dive centers that offer both scuba diving and free diving services. If you wish, you can also receive training.

Tubbahata Reef, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, is the most important diving spot nearby. You can only go here with liveaboard tours for a few days. Because the reef is located 14-15 hours from Puerto Princesa. Since it is very open from the land, its life life is extremely rich. It is considered one of the best diving spots in the world.

El Nido is an amazing place, but overflowing with tourists. There is always a movement. If you want to experience a similar beauty without crowds of tourists, your address should be the town of Port Barton. Port Barton, where resorts and big hotels are not yet located, is the address of peace. The only problem is that electricity and internet are very limited, only a few hours a day. After reaching such a magnificent environment, there is no electricity. Sometimes people want to stay away from technology, right? Read a book, watch the view, enjoy the moment.
